Filmography:Zhao Liang is the first producer and director from Mainland China to be contracted by the Discovery Channel. In 2007, he produced a popular 60-minute documentary entitled Lady Confucius. This outstanding work tells the rebellious story of Kong Linghe, a female descendent of Confucius who defies a 2000 year-old family tradition to be buried in the Cemetery of Confucius.
Zhao won the “Discovery First Time Filmmakers” Award in 2005 for his insightful documentary, Confucius Can Cook, which tells stories of two cooks and their trials and tribulations in their struggle to adapt to Confucian cooking. He subsequently accepted a position judging the Discovery award in 2006.
Many of his documentaries are based around the stories, history and traditions of one of the most revered families in China, that of Confucius. He provides a unique perspective of this clan courtesy of his special connections with some members of the family. The superb quality of his work has earned his team the honorary title “filmmakers of the Confucius family”.
After making documentaries for 14 years, Zhao has started to broaden his spectrum with great success. Chinese Kungfu Cricket was nominated as the “scenario with highest global marketing potential” at GZDOC in 2005.In 2008, Zhao was among the team which made a large-scale documentary for CCTV called Lifeline—Responses from Water, which critically assesses the water resource management of China’s ecosystem. Currenly, Zhao Liang is making a 30 minute documentary for NHK, named “A Farmer’s Struggle”. It is about a Chinese farmer’s struggle against sand storms.
