This is a wildlife film about flat-headed bat (Tylonycteris pachypusa).
Flat-headed bat is a small creature with a weight only 3 to 5 gram. They are not only the smallest bat over the world but the only kind of bat who live in bamboo trunks.
The story began with a seven year old young boy Lu Yuan, who walked into the bamboo forest in an evening purely because of curiousness while a bunch of tiny flat-headed bats were panic to run from the prey of an owl.
June, 2005 was an important time for the flat-headed bats that lived in Gaoxiang village. 22 baby bats had been delivered by 11 female bats who lived in the same bamboo trunk. 25 days later, the little ones were able to act like their parents and were ready for their new life. Unfortunately, this had been the rainiest summer for past 60 years. The heavy rain had changed the ecological environment in the forest. Flat-headed bats were facing a critical food shortage. Due to their tiny size, flat-headed bats are easily to be affected and preyed by others such as owls, snakes, cats and dogs from the nearby villages, even the ants. As the story goes on, viewers will see how this tiny and innocent creature dealing with series of threats and fighting for survival in their own way…
(Professor Zhang Libiao, the scientific advisor of this film, is one of the three fat-headed bat researchers over the world. Helped by Professor Zhang, our crew worked under the high heat in the bamboo forest in Guangxi province days and nights for 40 days. )
