(Loughborough  University)

(The Department of Social Sciences)

(The Communication Research Centre )

  Loughborough  University

Loughborough University is a research intensive institution which undertakes high quality research across all its subjects. Over the years the University has produced work which has influenced academic disciplines, public policy, the professions, business and industry. The widespread involvement of our staff in research activity ensures that our students are part of a vibrant research culture in which they are taught and supported by academics at the forefront of their disciplines. Loughborough is the largest single-site campus in the UK, consisting of 437 attractively landscaped acres. It is easily accessible by rail with a fast rail link to London. It is within 30 minutes of Nottingham, Leicester and Derby and is close to East Midlands International Airport. Loughborough University has been voted England’s Best Student Experience six years in a row by its students. This accolade is testament to the rounded experience that Loughborough provides its students, both academically and from an extra-curricular perspective.

  The Department of Social Sciences

The Department of Social Sciences is a vibrant home for interdisciplinary scholarship bringing together media and communications, sociology, social psychology and social policy. Our aim is to produce both fundamental and applied research of exceptional quality and we have a particularly strong international reputation for the application of inductive and qualitative research methods. Several international journals are edited by members of the department including the European Journal of Communication and Media, Culture and Society and members have acted as consultants for a wide range of national and international bodies including UNESCO, the United Nations, Ofcom, the Department for Children, Schools and Families, and the Institute for Public Policy Research. Our innovative research has received international recognition within the social sciences, including the award of the Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2005 for outstanding work at world-class level. One of our professors was recently appointed a member of the House of Lords in the UK Parliament. The Department of Social Sciences also houses state-of-the-art facilities for media and communications research. The Loughborough Qualitative Digital Research Lab (LiQUiD Lab) consists of a suite of rooms containing state-of-the-art equipment for the development of qualitative research involving the use of digital and audiovisual methods and media.

  The Communication Research Centre

Loughborough University's Communication Research Centre (CRC) is located within the Department of Social Sciences and brings together internationally leading researchers from a range of disciplinary backgrounds. Our interests span the range of communication studies from culture and media to discourse and social interaction. The centre is a home to a wide range of research projects on topics from political communication to media and religion. This includes the three-year IMPRINTS project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. This project explores the impact of new identity management practices and technology, such as biometric identification, smart ID cards, and smartphone developments   In 2011, the project was selected by the Research Councils and the Universities of the UK as one of their ‘Big Ideas for the Future’ – research that will 'have a profound effect on the UK’s future'.

TheCRChas also been prominent in assessing the nature of international political news. In early 2012, for example we were commissioned by theBBCTrust to investigate news coverage of the 'Arab Spring'.  The Centre analysedBBC, Al Jazeera and other broadcasters' reports of the uprisings in Egypt, Libya, Bahrain and elsewhere in the region, focussing in particular on the issue of journalistic impartiality.

The CRCis comprised of two core research groups; the Culture and Media Analysis Research Group (CaMARG) and the Discourse and Rhetoric Group (DARG). CaMARG brings together staff and students in the Department engaged in studying, researching, and writing about all aspects of both media and cultural life. It is interdisciplinary, drawing on insights from across the social sciences and humanities to explore institutional formations, expressive forms, and everyday practices. DARG is home to a community of academics, postgraduate students and visitors who pursue research into a broad range of topics but share an interest in language, how it is used socially, and what effects it has in interaction and in text. The groups also attract highly talented postgraduate and postdoctoral students from the UK and abroad.

The Media, Communications and Culture Programme

The CRC offers three different MA degrees in this programme which welcomes students from a wide range of academic disciplines. The programme has been running successfully since 2002. The MA in Media and Cultural Analysis focuses on understanding and explaining the ways in which the media represent the world, how they are used in public and private life, and the role of media and communications in shaping contemporary identities. The MA in Global Media and Cultural Industries takes a different perspective on the media which focuses on understanding and explaining the industries involved in media production and the ways in which states and other institutions intervene in them. The MA in Digital Media and Society concentrates on the ways in which the Internet and new technologies such as smartphones are changing our social world and creating opportunities for new forms of social interaction.

The degrees provide a comprehensive understanding of a variety of media and cultural industries in a global context, including public relations, journalism and digital communications. This has led our graduates into a range of careers after completing their MA. Many pursue careers in the media industries: we have past students who are now working in print and television journalism, documentary production and public relations. Graduates of the MAs have also gone on to work in other cultural industries such as publishing and telecommunications. The degrees provide a comprehensive theoretical grounding in media, communications and culture and a significant number of our graduates subsequently undertake research degrees in order to pursue academic careers in the UK and abroad.
