Media at Nottingham Trent University
Nottingham Trent has an outstanding reputation for teaching and researching media, communications and culture, based on combining the close integration of theoretical media analysis with the creative production of media content. Media is ranked 3rd nationally (Complete University Guide 2011) and offers innovative placement briefs for students working with local NGOs and employers. We host the internationally renowned GameCity festival, the “Sundance of the videogames world”. Media performed at the highest level in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Media at NTU is developing strong and sustainable links with key partners in China, we are one of only a handful of UK members of M League, and provide distinctive taught collaborations with a particular focus on Asian and Chinese Media.
The largest specialist undergraduate course is BA Media, which allows students to focus on Media Production and Media Communications (encompassing PR, advertising and journalism), while the degrees in Broadcast Journalism and Print Journalism are accredited, vocational qualifications. At postgraduate level, a variety of masters courses are offered, including an acclaimed MA in Media and Globalization, MA degrees in Broadcast, Magazine and Newspaper Journalism and our innovative MA in Games and Play (Technology and Culture) that provides hands-on workshop-based learning opportunities specifically designed to develop the skillsets needed for careers in the creative and digital industries shaping our world. Two important aspects of media at Nottingham Trent are our collaborations with the creative industries in the UK; and the first-rate commitment to internationalisation in all that we do, encompassing mobility for the student body and a global curriculum. All undergraduate students complete a media industry placement, and many choose to engage with the opportunities for international learning about the media in our partner universities worldwide.
The Dean of the School, Professor Murray Pratt has an outstanding record in leading internationalisation initiatives in the Arts and Humanities, and, together with key academics in the School, he engages regularly in collaborative endeavours in research and teaching with Chinese and European partners. The School of Arts and Humanities is now in the second year of its China Initiative, involving 6 partner universities in China (3 in Beijing, 1 in Shanghai, 1 in Yunnan, 1 in Henan). Our partner portfolio includes developing exchanges in Europe, America, and Asia, including new links with Thailand and India; hosting international research symposia across continents (involving academics from countries as diverse as Australia and Mexico), pioneering Global Studies at NTU, and delivering joint degrees in International Studies. Professors and other academic staff in Media have an outstanding history of collaborating with research partners in China, leading to key publications, many of which have become must-read texts for students and researchers alike.
